What is « Bach in the days » all about ? First of all it’s a wink at Bach and classical music, but also at the famous phrase “Back in the days” which literally means back to the roots, and which is meaningful to rappers as it reminds them of the original hip hop values of the late 80ies. It’s above all a musical and original project of a beatboxer from Saint- Etienne who enjoys mixing genres in a unique piano/ beatbox mix. How to captivate crowds without a record deck nor a LP, and just with his vocal cords.
Willy Amarat alias Rewind who is only 28, has already had quite a record of achievements. He has learnt the ropes with classical guitar and music theory.”It taught me how to be rigourous. I also acquired a culture and how to be open”. At the age of 16 he had other vibrations in his head which sometimes was upside down. Attracted by scratch and hip hop he got fascinated by the fundamental values of the “Peace, Love Unity and having fun “ movement. Thanks to Saîan Supa Crew he discovered the beatbox which was a real revelation.” It was just what I needed : making scratches, rythms with the mouth. Everything I was looking for was in this unique discipline. Add to that the show aspect and quite spectacular of the beatbox”. Let’s not forget that the “Human beat box” consist in imitating a multi vocalism imitating a beat box, scratches, drums rolls and musical instruments, mainly percussions.Willy had a go and had fun making sounds on his own. It was like a game which he really enjoyed. He practiced in his bedroom, his bathroom, at school, with his mates...everywhere he could make the sounds. He played with Eska Crew, a rap band from Saint Etienne whom he played with as the beatboxer. The album “Survival instinct” was out in 2005 at Virgin’s. He also made the first part of numerous most famous hip hop artists such as “De la Soul”, Kenny Muhammad, Kery James, The Procussions or Joe Star.
He then participated to his first beatbox battles in France. That was how he won different prizes such as “The Air Sringboard for Young people” the national competition Battle of the Year at Montpellier” in 2007, then in Saint Denis 2008. He was also second in the “Mouth Fight again in 2008. That how he got famous with his hard-hitting style. By chance he met other passionate singers whom with he develops and experiments different styles in his show so as to promote his art.“The beatbox is quite universal. There’s no text, no language barrier: it’s therefore international. It also touches people straight away, it’s simple and direct”. That’s how he got to work with Diego Losa, the argentine electro- acoustic music composer, at the GRM (Music Research Group based in Paris). He also was the fisrt French beatboxer to play in an opera (Wroclaw Poland). Still it’s really on stage that he is at his best where he mixes classical music and hip hop scratches or baggy trousers with a grand piano. Accompanied by Thomas Fresneau, a classical pianist and arranger, he enjoys updating classical music codes and transcending genres. Just like a DJ, “Rewind” seizes any musical style -hip hop, electro, lounge, club or jungle- he makes scratches and sounds, he gives beats and makes a very kinematics instrumental music alive. Of course the choice of Rewind as a stage name is not insignificant! In English Rewind is meaningful. This phrase is often used by DJs when rewinding LPs tracks.
There is the piano and beautiful music, urban sounds, a mix, a fusion, generosity and emotion. “Thanks to the piano, my beats are colourful. I can bring more colours, life and emotion to my beat structures”. Original compositions, a few cover versions and a medley of French rap standards on the piano (Kery James, Booba, La Cliqua, I AM, Sniper...). One can esometimes think of Wax Taylor. Actually Rewind admits being influenced by artists such as Ninja Tune and Bonobo.Mixing long contemplative sessions and technoid sounds, the vitality of Bach in the Days is surprising. It was a difficult bet to mix together two worlds apart: on the one end classical music conformism which follows its rules and partitions, on the other end, street art with no rule but resourceful. Tinkering, experiencing, and taking risks are the tracks Rewind enjoys following so as to be found where he isn’t expected.
